The War in Ukraine: How It Started, How It's Going

Daniel Woodward

Contrary to what most people consciously realize, the war in Ukraine began in 2014, not 2022.It began when the United States, during the Obama administration, funded and supported a coup in Ukraine, known to the world as the Maidan movement.

This resulted in the elected president of Ukraine being forcibly and undemocratically overthrown and chased out of the country.

The United States then handpicked his immediate successor.

You see, Ukraine itself has its own East/West divide.

The West of Ukraine sees itself as wanting to be more “European.” They want to ally themselves with the so-called West, become part of the EU, and even become part of NATO. They are strongly ethnically Ukrainian - and while Ukrainians are ethnic brothers with both Russians and Belarusians, there is still a distinct (although very similar) language. But their histories are intertwined.

The East, however, has many large areas of Russian-speaking Ukrainians - which, functionally speaking, basically means theyIn the aftermath of the U.S. orchestrated Maidan coup, Ukrainian ultra-nationalism surged. Having undemocratically overthrown the president, there was widespread unrest in the East of Ukraine, which supported him. Territories began to rise up and rebel, and civil war began.

Russia reacted as well, rightly seeing this as a direct threat not only to their serious interests, but to their safety. If Ukraine were to become part of NATO, this was a serious line that could not be crossed.

The United States knew this - but the Obama administration arrogantly did it anyway.

Russia’s immediate reaction was to send in unmarked troops (dubbed “little green men”) into Crimea and seize it from the illegitimate government. This is because Crimea was home to a Russian naval base, and the obvious goal of the Obama regime was to turn Ukraine upside down and kick Russia’s naval base out of the country.

Russia’s rationale for justification was firstly, to protect its naval base and second, that Crimea was historically never part of Ukraine and was only given as a “gift” to Ukraine in 1954 by Moscow. And for that matter, all of Ukraine’s borders were originally drawn up by Moscow anyway.

Russia also sent in unmarked troops into the far Eastern territories that rebelled to lend support in their resistance against the illegitimate Ukrainian government installed by the United States. They would not let the West meddle in their backyard with hostile actions without answering it and making them pay for it.

This resulted in what became a “frozen conflict,” a state of war that remained largely unchanged in the far East of Ukraine for the next 8 years.

During this time, the U.S.-backed Ukrainian government was guilty of numerous atrocities against the Russian-speaking people of East Ukraine.

Ukrainian ultra-nationalism surged and units like the infamous Azov Battalion adopted Nazi imagery (many of which were actually, in fact, neo-Nazis) and wore it not only on their uniforms, but paraded with Ukrainian-Nazi flags in Kiev - to the cheers of the populace.

This is because during World War II, Ukraine was divided in loyalties and Ukrainian ultra-nationlists at that time allied with Hitler to fight the Russians. So this was a throwback to that era, realizing it again in the present with the same motives - annihilate Russian-speaking Ukrainian citizens.

Cities were bombed, citizens were deliberately slaughtered, speaking Russian was outlawed in various parts.

It was a real shit show, but you wouldn’t see it in Western mainstream news.

The conflict remained in its frozen state during the Trump years, and more should have been done to settle it then, but there wasn’t.

Fast forward to the Biden administration.

Putin communicates through back channels that if guarantees are not made that Ukraine will not become part of NATO - he is going to invade, topple the government, and end the war once and for all.

The U.S. thumbed its nose at him and told him to get lost.

This is why the Biden administration knew - and declared - that Putin was getting ready to invade. I didn’t believe it at the time, I thought it was all just fear-mongering from the U.S. to distract from problems at home, and saber-rattling by Russia. But we now know that all of his was talked about and openly communicated behind the scenes.

And so in February 2022, Russia dramatically escalated the conflict with a full-blown invasion, in an attempt to end it.

Russia invade from Crimea, from the East, and from Belarus, gaining incredible ground.Kiev was soon surrounded and the citizens, bravely and to their credit, began to take up arms and prepare to defend the city from invasion. The world braced for a very bloody assault.

But it never happened - why?

Because behind the scenes, diplomacy had temporarily prevailed and Russia was told by Ukraine that if they would back off of Kiev, they would come to the negotiating table.

This is why the Russian army suddenly, and without public explanation, withdrew from its strong positions around Kiev.

But then Ukraine double-crossed Russia and went back on its pledge to negotiate - why?Because the Biden administration told them to keep fighting.

And so Ukraine - like a good little puppet country, did exactly that.

Three years have come and gone, and we have pumped money and weapons into Ukraine so they can continue their war.

Hundreds of thousands, if not over a million, have perished. An entire generation of Ukrainian men has been destroyed.

They are running out of people to send to the front lines, so they now send women and grab young men from the street and throw them in military vans to forcibly recruit them.

Elections are now forbidden in Ukraine, so Zelensky is now a U.S.-backed dictator, and the people have no way to get rid of him and end the war themselves - because Zelensky will keep it going as long as he can.

What the United States and Europe have done to Ukraine is - objectively - evil.

Ukraine thought we were their friends. But really, all we did was use them.

The world has been brought to the brink of World War III over this conflict. It is the most dangerous provocation of a nuclear power, by other nuclear powers, the world has ever seen.

And what for?

The Western media will tell you Russia wants to conquer Europe like Hitler and we have to stop him. And yet - we provoked all of this in the first place. NATO has creeped right up to Russia’s borders and the U.S. has surrounded Russia with military bases in Central Asian states that are part of the former Soviet Union.

It’s more than understandable if Russia be alarmed by this and take measures to thwart it.

Whether you like him or not, we now have a president in Donald Trump who sees how horrible this war is and how it must end.

And end it must.

But some talking heads, even on the political right, still have their minds in the Bush era of neo-con American imperialism.

These people need to wake up.

They won’t, but they need to.

But because they won’t - they should not be listened to. They should be completely ignored and shunned.

This is the time for peace to finally break out, for disputes to be settled diplomatically, for provocations to end, for relations to be restored, for rebuilding and prosperity to ensue.

We have, for the time being, averted World War III. That’s a huge part of what the 2024 election was about.

And we should be thanking our lucky stars that finally there is a strong enough collective will in the United States to “give peace a chance.”
