My First Experience With Chakras

It was early one morning, while all was quiet in the house, and I could not sleep. My thoughts were racing and refused to be quieted. I tossed and turned in bed until finally I gave up. It wasn’t so much that I wanted to sleep as I just wanted to quiet my thoughts, because the constant stream felt torturous. This wasn’t a normal condition for me, but every now and then it would flare up.

I got up and sat down on the couch in the early light of dawn. I thought maybe some soothing music might help. So, I whipped out my laptop, popped in my earbuds and browsed the internet. I came across an audio track containing something called “binaural beats” with certain sound wave frequencies as part of a chakra meditation. Specifically, it was for something called the “root chakra.”

Chakras.

I had heard the term before but never paid much attention. It all seemed a bit too complicated for me, and so I had tuned out. I really hadn’t investigated the concept much at all. But maybe now would be a good time to get better acquainted? The track promised help in relaxation, anyway.

Not to be too dramatic, but what happened next honestly changed my life.    The track consisted of soothing music with nearly inaudible beats or rhythms slightly offset in each ear, and the music was in a certain vibrational frequency measured in hertz. There were calming and soothing verbal affirmations as well. As I listened, I could feel my stress and tension begin to melt away and my mind become calmer. I become both relaxed and focused.   This was wonderful and as it was the early morning hours and I had time on my hands, I listened for quite a long time. At least a good hour or more. I wanted to maximize the effect as much as possible.

After a while, it began to feel as if my brain were somehow being shifted or altered. It was almost a physical feeling, as if it were numbing any feelings of anxiety. I understood later that what really happened was my brain waves had been changed as they matched the frequency of the sound I had been listening to.   For the rest of the day, I was a different person. Daily stresses and challenges would come, but it was like the frustration I would have normally felt just bounced off of me. This was a long, lingering effect for me. My wife even noticed the change and asked me about it. In fact, for the next three days my mood and my ability to handle stress had improved drastically. I just felt like whatever came my way, I could handle it. No worry. No problem. When the effect seemed to finally fade, I returned to the same source for more.

The world of binaural beats, frequencies and chakra meditations had been opened up to me, and my interest in chakras immediately skyrocketed.

Eventually, I branched out and began to experiment with meditative frequencies related to other chakras, which lead to other amazing experiences. But I’ll delve into those another time.   So just what exactly is a chakra?

In blunt terms, and for those not familiar, the idea is that it’s basically a spinning wheel of energy located at a specific point in your body that corresponds to certain aspects of mental, physical and spiritual wellness. The concept comes from ancient teachings within Hinduism and Buddhism. Traditionally, there are seven chakras that form a vertical line, from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. Other traditions identify many, many more chakras, but mainly, the core chakra system is just the seven.

As a beginner, seven chakras were enough for me. They still are.

Naturally, as I explored and experimented with the chakra system, the question began to arise as to whether the system is actually real. Are there really seven spinning wheels of energy in a vertical line on our bodies? Do they really correspond to specific things? Or is it all just mumbo-jumbo? Feel-good meditative practice rooted in the imagination?    My conclusion is two-fold.

One, it gets the job done.

Two, it doesn’t really matter.

After all, if it works, who cares whether it’s “real” or “imagined?” The effect is real enough, and that is what’s really important.
